The British are taking a walk on the wild side, as we get a real taste for game. Latest research from MINTEL shows that sales for meat such as venison, pheasant and grouse soared 46% between 2004 and 2006, to reach £57 million last year. Although still a premium, niche market, these meats are clearly a cut above the rest, with everyday red meat and poultry markets growing by no more than 5% over the same two year period.

The winner and runners up of the Scottish Food Scholarship 2007 have now been announced at the Scottish Food Scholarship Awards ceremony at Lulu in Edinburgh a week after the final at ScotHot, Glasgow, SECC. The final followed three semi finals around the country at Aberdeen College, Ayr College and Edinburgh Telford College. The Scottish Food Scholarship,www.scottishfoodscholarship.co.uk, organised by Crimson Edge PR is an annual competition open to talented young chefs aged 18-28 years, judged by a selection of Scotland’s Michelin star chefs, to include Martin Wishart, Keith Braidwood and Jeff Bland. The Scottish Food Scholar 2007 is namely Liam Mckenna from Circus Bar and Grill in Edinburgh, second place went to Tristin Farmer from Enverdale House Hotel in Coupar Angus and third place went to Brian Grigor from Greywalls Hotel in Gullane. Highland Game are travelling throughout Scotland with the Tesco Taste of Scotland tour to promote the Healthy living benefits of Venison and the availability of Highland Game’s Retail Range, in a number of stores throughout Scotland.
The Enjoy the Taste of Scotland Healthy Eating Tour starts 7 February 2007 in Dalkeith, Midlothian ending on 4 March 2007 in Ayr. Events in stores include sampling, discount vouchers and give-aways.
Highland Game will be providing customers with the opportunity to taste the Diced and Red Pepper Casserole recipe by the companies award winning food writer and food stylist, Maxine Clark.
